Thomas Starr King is a school on the rise! Located in the southeastern part of the city, Starr King is a Reading First school using the newly adopted Houghton Mifflin/Lectura program. Struggling readers are given fluency practice in the Read Naturally Lab so that children can devote more time to build meaning from their reading. The receive instruction from professional artists in instrumental music, fine arts and dance. Our Spanish Bilingual Maintenance program allows students to master English while maintaining their native language. The special education program consists of three Special Day Classes (SDC) and students who are included in most classrooms. It is a solid program with highly trained staff using PECS and TEACH strategies. There is a free after school program from 2:45 until 5:45 that both reinforces academics and provides challenging enrichment activities. We have a strong Pre-K program, a technology lab with 20 iMacs and a mental health worker on site 20 hours per week.

Tech Company Donates to Daniel Webster Elementary School

Last month, Sifteo, a Dogpatch start up company donated 25 sets of its interactive Sifteo cubes to Daniel Webster Elementary School.  The computers are being used by first graders to help with phonemic awareness, and as part of afterschool vocabulary and spelling programs.  Sifteo is making monthly visits to the after-school program to evaluate how well the Cubes are working, and solicit student ideas about new game designs.

School Address Fraud

Much has been written about the upcoming changes to the SF school assignment system... and one of the new aspects is supposed to be better verification that the address you provide for your student is actually the address where the student lives.
