Located in sunny Noe Valley near the base of Twin Peaks, Alvarado attracts families from its immediate neighborhood and all over San Francisco. Parents may apply for our popular Dual Spanish/English Immersion strand or our quality English-only strand. Both strands emphasize educating the whole child through the arts, literature and mathematics. . In addition to effective, experience-based classroom instruction, all disciplines are supported through computer technology. Our classrooms have networked computers and we have a library with hundreds of new, high interest books. Student art and class work is always on display in the bright and sunny hallways of Alvarado. Artists in Residence work with all children K-5 in clay, visual arts, dance, theatre and more. We have science and computer labs with learning specialists in science and educational technology onsite. A new, state funded after school program, EXCEL, supports the learning of students who score below the fiftieth percentile on standardized tests. We also have a private, fee-based after school program available on site provided through West Portal Child Care called Alvarado After School. Our students, parents, artists and the general school community created the magnificent ceramic mural that won a San Francisco Beautiful Award and now dazzles visitors at Alvarado's Eureka Street entrance.
