The Adda Clevenger School was established in 1980 to serve the needs of children who have above average or superior learning ability. The school offers grades kindergarten through eighth and is committed to providing the best in arts as well as academic education.

An environment has been designed to stimulate, challenge and inspire students, to open as many doors as possible and to provide opportunities to develop their talents to the fullest. By eighth grade they should be well prepared to qualify for admission to honors classes in college preparatory high schools. The philosophy of the school is best expressed by James J. Gallagher who writes, "We can create giftedness through designing enriched environments and opportunities, or we can destroy it by failing to create those environments and opportunities."

A systematic phonics-based program is used to teach reading and spelling of the English language. The curriculum includes grammar and creative writing at all levels, composition, speech and debate, and classical, modern, and dramatic literature. Beginning in second grade, Junior Great Books enter the reading curriculum. Junior High students compete in two speech tournaments annually. In early grades, the math program emphasizes acquisition of basic computational skills, moving to more complex concepts including pre-algebra and geometry. Eighth grade students complete Algebra 1 and some start second year high school math. A four-year course in American history is begun in fifth grade, Junior High students study the ancient world and Europe to 1815 AD. Science classes commence in kindergarten.

Tech Company Donates to Daniel Webster Elementary School

Last month, Sifteo, a Dogpatch start up company donated 25 sets of its interactive Sifteo cubes to Daniel Webster Elementary School.  The computers are being used by first graders to help with phonemic awareness, and as part of afterschool vocabulary and spelling programs.  Sifteo is making monthly visits to the after-school program to evaluate how well the Cubes are working, and solicit student ideas about new game designs.

School Address Fraud

Much has been written about the upcoming changes to the SF school assignment system... and one of the new aspects is supposed to be better verification that the address you provide for your student is actually the address where the student lives. ABC 7 had a story last night about a bunch of cases of address fraud that have been recently found in the district, with the district only putting in a minimal amount
