Bean and Alfalfa Sprouts are an essential ingredient in my cooking. I put them on salads, add them to stir fry, eat them raw by the handful…you get the idea. So imagine my joy when I discovered how easily and inexpensively they can be grown on a sunny windowsill. An investment of one Mason Jar, $4 of seeds and a square of cheesecloth can yield 10 - 12 quarts of sprouts in as little as five days! Check SFGate for complete instructions on raising your sprouts.

Gracias Madre, on Mission at 18th Street, is a vegan Mexican food restaurant not just for vegetarians. There's something for everyone: enchiladas, tamales, tacos, tostadas, all with a surprising twist. The food is seasonal and locally grown. It's amazing how they can make cashews taste like sour cream!  The service was casual but accommodating. Give it a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed!
