Kindergarten Classes Start at Italian International School in Dogpatch

La Piccola Scuola Italiana, aka, Italian International School, located at 20th and Tennessee Streets, will launch it's first kindergarten class this fall, with a maximum of 15 students.  The school will offer Italian language immersion; is Reggio Emilia inspired, following a child-oriented team, and inquiry-based approach to learning; with a nine to one student/teacher ratio.  Hot lunch and snacks, often organic, will be prepared daily by two onsite Italian chefs.

Eat and drink and donate to a good cause!  Feast your palate on tastes from 15 of the City's most elite restaurants and bars, including Ame, Tacolicious, Hapa Ramen, Poquito, Skool, Piccino, Magnolia, Dynamo Donuts, Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous, Nojo, Local Mission Eatery, and numerous others. Taste of Potrero raises funds for Daniel Webster Elementary School.

Flora Grubb Gardens is hosting an evening garden party including hors d'oeuvres, wine, and a live performance by a Grammy-winning quartet.  There will be a silent auction with a selection from many local businesses. All proceeds benefit Friends of Potrero Hill Nursery School and create scholarship funds for children who might not otherwise be able to attend preschool.  

Tech Company Donates to Daniel Webster Elementary School

Last month, Sifteo, a Dogpatch start up company donated 25 sets of its interactive Sifteo cubes to Daniel Webster Elementary School.  The computers are being used by first graders to help with phonemic awareness, and as part of afterschool vocabulary and spelling programs.  Sifteo is making monthly visits to the after-school program to evaluate how well the Cubes are working, and solicit student ideas about new game designs.

Daniel Webster Fundraiser Huge Success

Last month's Taste of Potrero, a benefit for Daniel Webster Elementary School, was a smashing success, hundreds of people attended the event at Dogpatch Studios, many local restaurants donated food and wine, and there was a silent auction as well.  This event raised almost $50,000.  It was truly one of the best school fundraisers I have ever attended.  Kudos to the parents of this school who donated their time and energy into putting on this creative event.

Dogpatch may soon need to change it's name to Cabbagepatch.  Potrero Kids at Daniel Webster was recently awarded the child care space allocated in the Potrero Launch Affordable building, currently under construction at 2235 Third Street.  The preschool, meant to serve as a feeder for Daniel Webster Elementary School, will expand its programs to serve not just preschool age students, but also toddlers and infants.  The new location is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2012.

There is an event at Farley's. It's a fun, family friendly art reception with light music organized by Friends of Potrero Hill Preschool.  New photographs by Kelli Yon are on display in conjunction with historic images relating to the neighborhood and the I.M. Scott School on Tennessee Street.  Exhibit and window boxes support the campaign to Raise a Roof on this site.

Raise a Roof for Friends at I.M. Scott is an effort to repurpose the two derelict bungalows at the I. M. Scott School, the old school on Tennessee Street at 22nd, and the oldest schoolhouse in San Francisco.  The goal of Raise a Roof is to turn the south bungalow into a Family Center, serving new parents and providing a multi-purpose meeting space for the community after hours.
