Unbeknownst to me, and perhaps many others, there are ‘gourmet’
restaurants in San Francisco
that operate "underground," without the benefit of health department
inspections or a license. The diners receive very little notice about the
secret locations and the meals can cost up to $100 per person. If you’re into
gourmet food, communal dining, and illicit restaurants, this may be for you.

If you fancy sushi, you may want to head to 18th Street where Rocketfish, owned by the famed owner of Blowfish, Kenichi Kawashima, opened in late June. It has a combination of classic Japanese and New World tapas, a sushi bar, and the Rocketfish Lounge offers creative drinks at great prices and they have Happy Hour food and drink specials. www.rocketfishlounge.com.

If you're a fan of Humphry Slocombe's ice cream or Flour + Water's Italian food, then you will cheer the news that both owners have projects planned for the large pink building on 20th Street between Florida & Alabama. Parlour by Humphrey Slocombe will be a bakery and cafe, and the Flour + Water owners are planning a restaurant known as Central Kitchen. Living a block away, I can hardly wait until they open!

Gracias Madre, on Mission at 18th Street, is a vegan Mexican food restaurant not just for vegetarians. There's something for everyone: enchiladas, tamales, tacos, tostadas, all with a surprising twist. The food is seasonal and locally grown. It's amazing how they can make cashews taste like sour cream! The service was casual but accommodating. Give it a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed!
