(Environmental studies student, Kelsey Roeder getting her hands dirty.) Smack-dab in the middle of a thriving, inner-city San Francisco neighborhood, Hayes Valley Farm has transformed what used to be a highway on-ramp into a modern Eden and model of sustainable agriculture! The mission of this community-run cooperative is to give area residents a green gathering space where they may grow their own food and flowers and learn about ecological systems. Guided tours are available by appointment, but feel free to drop in and explore between 12 and 5 p.m. any Wednesday, Friday, or Sunday. Sunday is a particularly good day to stop by because the garden offers Sunday FUNday, a farm-inspired craft day for families with children. For information on this and other activities, please e-mail kids@hayesvalleyfarm or visit
