Every Valentines Day, artists from around the world create one-of-a-kind painted sculptures in support of Hearts and Heroes, a nine-year-old community event that has raised millions of dollars in support of the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation. Treating nearly 100,000 patients annually, San Francisco General Hospital provides much needed care to the most vulnerable of patients, including those who have neither money nor insurance. The above five-foot, four-hundred-pound sculpture, called Bound, was painted by local artist Linda Adreveno, who drew inspiration from the deep blue water of the bay. The knotted ropes represent the ties that bind the city together; there are forty-nine knots, one for each square mile of San Francisco. In addition to Bound, twelve other hearts will be sold at auction during the Hearts and Heroes 2013 luncheon on February 14. For ticket information, please visit
