San Francisco is home to the annual Chinese New Year
festival and parade. Each year,
thousands of people come to see what is considered the largest celebration of
Asian culture, outside of Asia. The main
attraction is the grand parade that winds its way through China Town and ends
on Columbus Street. Dragons, costumes, marching
bands, dances, floats and fireworks are some of the traditional displays during
the parade that attracts visitors. Some
of the floats are so large, they take over one hundred people to operate like
one of the main appeals “Gum Lung”, or the Golden Dragon. Each year the Chinese New Year grows in
popularity and excitement. The festival
has now expanded into a two week event with other attractions such as the
Flower Market and Miss China Town U.S.A.
This weekend marked the end of another successful parade here in San
Francisco. Thousands came to see the
streets littered with vibrant colors and elegant performances. It was another successful event and until
next year, “Gung Hay Fat Choy”!
