If you are not familiar with EARN, then I really encourage you to go to their website to learn more about their program(s). EARN a non-profit located in the San Francisco Bay Area and it is the fastest growing micro savings program for low-income workers in the nation. This amazing organization works with people by way of education and matched savings accounts to help them achieve their financial goals and dreams. "Savers", as they are referred to, are saving often times to become the first generation in their families to go to college, while others dream of home ownership or starting their own business.
Last year I was fortunate enough to attend the annual luncheon where they announce and honor the Asset Builder of the Year. The luncheon is quite large and very thoughtfully planned, as they place a Saver at each table. Everybody at my table was asking our Saver questions about her goals, her progress and exactly how EARN was helping her achieve her dream. It was quite touching and as I looked around my table, I could see it wasn't just me with misty eyes.
The main event came when the 2010 Asset Builder of the Year was honored and we were able to hear, first hand, about her incredible journey. There wasn't a dry eye left in the house when Dametra was finished speaking. After we wiped away our tears, everybody reached down into their wallets, pockets and handbags to begin writing the donation checks. That was EVERY table, not just mine!
